While my mom and sister were in Italy, we all took a day trip to Siena!
Last time I tried this trip with my roommates, we missed our first train, had a delay with the second, arrived after the museums closed but just in time for the rainy, cold weather. This time, it was sunny and warm, and we arrived just in time for lunch.
In the past, Florence and Siena were rivals for the financial stronghold of Italy. However, when the plague hit, one third of Siena's hill town population was wiped out. Florence won the stronghold, and Siena stayed the smaller, less crowded town it is today. It's a really nice place to visit to get away from the city buses and traffic of Rome and Florence, because there are still (touristy) historical aspects, but beautiful scenery as well.
We visited the Duomo and it's museum, which held a large amount of art and allowed you to get a 360 degree view of Siena from the top of the museum. Piazza del Campo is a great place to relax and have a picnic facing the City Tower, that stands tall over Siena.
