I have to admit, I was pretty nervous the week before my departure. However, the IES staff were very helpful in the process of getting from baggage claim to front door of my apartment. It seems like whenever I turn a corner, there is some place that is picture worthy. The scenery is so different, so beautiful compared to the cities I'm used to. Rome has so much The roads seem overwhelming at first, but carrying a small map can help you regain confidence.
Note to future study abroad students: Don't bring a surge protector or a converter, they'll just tell you not to use them. A good tip: buy a small adaptor for you're dual voltage (110-240V) electronics or electrics. Buying a hair dryer and/or straightener over here is a good idea, too. I tried plugging in my EuroSurge protector, and it shut off all the electricity in my apartment. No one warned me about it, so I'm going to tell you.
PACK LIGHT!I don't mean bring nothing, but I didn't post the pictures of girls who packed two huge suitcases, and then two large carry-ons on top of that. They had so much trouble finding a taxi that would take all their luggage, and then they were charged extra for the extra weight. Plus, getting that much stuff to their apartment was probably just as difficult. Remember, you want room for souvenirs, you want room for the school thing you are probably bringing back, and you want room for anything else you collect while abroad. Pack smart, and don't bring everything including the kitchen sink because you "just might" use it.
Most of all, there's so much to do during the first week! Since there is orientation, students have time to see the sites, meet other students, and just enjoy the new atmosphere before they even have their first assignment. My roommates and I have taken advantage of this time, and gone site seeing during our breaks and free time.
