Baking ClassParis BIA, Spring 2012
Every week IES posts a “question of the week” and if you answer it correctly you can win some great prizes. This past week I took a shot at it and won a baking class! I was overjoyed to get the opportunity to bake in a French bakery, and it turned out to be a great experience.
We each made our own cake called a Chalala under the instruction of one of the bakers named Alice. She was very patient and helpful. It was interesting to make each component in large quantities, and it gave me a feel for what working in a bakery is really like. We probably used almost 10 sticks of butter!
- The bakery was called Chez Bogato and it sells pastries, candy, baking supplies and also serves tea and coffee.
- Their kitchen was impressive and they had all of the ingredients already measured out for us.
- Alice taught us how to make bows out of almond paste to decorate our cakes.
- The middle of the Chalala is filled with pastry creme and raspberries.
- The completed cake consists of two layers of madeline cookie dough, pastry creme, raspberries and almond paste.
- The cakes looked precious all lined up.
- I was impressed with all of the supplies in the kitchen. These containers were filled with different edible decorations.
- I was very excited to take mine home in its own little cake box!
- The cake was great when I finally got to dig in!
