Surf’s Up!Sydney, Spring 2011
- Many sections of Sydney have local guides, such as this one we saw when we got off the ferry in Manly. This guide has a map and information about Manly.
- The rainy weather did not cancel our surfing lesson.
- We met our group at the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club at Manly Beach for our surfing lesson.
- The surfers code is posted outside of the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club.
- This is where we learned to surf at Manly Beach.
- IES friends and I after our surfing lesson.
Last weekend, we had an IES surfing lesson with the Manly Surf School at Manly Beach. Manly is one of Sydney’s northern beaches, so we took a ferry to Manly from Circular Quay. It was a little upsetting that it was far from the perfect beach day (cool, a bit windy, and rainy), but I did not let that get in the way of my excitement of learning how to surf. Once we got off the ferry, we found our way to the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club where we met up with our IES group and the surf instructors. After we put on our wetsuits and grabbed our surfboards, the instructors took us over to the sand where they talked about surf safety and basic techniques. After a few practices on the sand, we hit the water. For the next 2 hours, we tried to catch some waves and I managed to stand up a couple times!

Learning something new in a different country is always an awesome experience! Especially something like surfing because I have been told by my aussie friends that it is almost a part of their culture! May friends are almost finished with their trip here in the U.S. and have learned so many new things about our culture, education and social activities just as you are doing there! It looks like you are having a great time and are taking advantage of the opportunities that have been given to you! Enjoy your time, it goes by fast and I am already dreading the day I have to say goodbye.
