Back in the U.S.Berlin, Summer 2011
I’m not going to lie. It’s been a little over a week since I left Berlin and back in the states, but it’s weird to be back. The first night back, I went to my favorite tex-mex restaurant and had to restrain myself from speaking to the waiter in German. I was also pleasantly surprised to have cold water with ice and no bubbles, and to have my food come out within ten minutes or so rather than in a half hour! It was strange to hear English and Spanish after hearing German for the last few months.
It’s nice to home, but when I go out and about that’s when I feel like I should be waiting for the tram rather than driving. I went with some of my friends to Main Event last night… I did the worst parking job I’ve done since I learned how to drive, and at the restaurant was the only out of six of us who paid in cash, since that’s what I did when I was in Berlin.. a lot of places don’t take cards.
As much as I missed my friends and family, I kinda wish I could just bring everyone to Berlin to share with them what I experienced. With a year left for undergrad, I think that studying abroad has been the highlight of my college career. I had so much fun, learned a lot inside the classroom and out, and met amazing people…much more than I even expected. I’m looking forward to classes next semesters to get to use my German once more and tell all of my college friends my stories. It’s good to be back, but I miss Berlin and everyone and everything there.
Tschüss for now, Berlin… I’ll be back. Until then, I’ll be getting weird looks from people when I ask for extra mayonnaise to dip my fries when I eat out.
