One of the things that really drew me to the IES Tokyo program was the option of doing a field placement. In some ways, it's like doing an internship: every week on Wednesdays, students go to their assigned field placement host company and help out in various ways around the company, which could be a school, a shrine, a translation company, an art gallery or any of a number of different places. In addition to the weekly field placements, we all keep culture learning journals and write an ethnographic research paper. It's a great way to really get a deeper understanding of Japan, because instead of just reading about it, we really get to experience work at Japanese company, and not all of them are the kind sarariimen (the typical white collar Japanese company employee) work at.
My field placement is with GoFa, a small art gallery in Omotesando (near Harajuku and Shibuya). They've had a few exhibits since I've been working with them, including a book signing with the author/artist of Oh! My Goddess! this weekend.
Because of the nature of my field placement, it's hard to get photos (they don't allow photos inside the gallery, for obvious reasons) but these are a few to give you an idea what kinds of exhibits they have.[gallery link="file"] If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed! - Leslie Ann Hynes, IES Abroad |

Leslie,
Nice summary of the field placement program. I’m so glad that you’ve had this wonderful opportunity while studying in Japan.
