Day 3 (tag drei)
Woke up at 5am, couldn't sleep. So then I left to walk around at 7. I walked a complete circle around the block and then came back, got dressed for breakfast. We (the group; Sam, Sarah, Caroline, Batu, Alex and me) are meeting at the normal spot just outside the dorms at 9:30. The meeting spot is closer to 150, where everyone else stays. I however stay in 164, just behind 150. Nonetheless, I am willing to walk the extra 20 steps without complaint. Its 9:30 and Nina, another German student is the HT, housing tutor for today. We ride the tram (railcar, similar to the Marta railcars) to the center and get breakfast. Pastries from a local bakery, absolutely wonderful. Strawberry, Apple, Raspberry, Cream Cheese, Nuts, rectangular and semicircular, lightly toasted or golden brown. It is simply an assortment of soft flaky slices of heaven. I bite into the layers of buttery dough and instantly the crunch of the salty nuts takes over, then my taste buds are ambushed by the tangy fruit filling, finally this is interrupted by the sweet cream cheese goodness. By the end of one your taste buds are so exhausted by the various sensations but at the same time begging for more. Intrigued, I try another, brown… mmm, apple. It does not disappoint. After breakfast, we listen to orientation presentations. Liza, both Karins, and a few ppl who's names I cannot remember how to spell basically give us the ins and outs of the program, none of which the 6 of us will remember. After a morning of “welcome to Freiburg” presentations Zach takes us on a city tour and then to lunch. Zach speaks fluent German and has brief conversations with every 6th person that passes by. He's very popular, or just told all of the people he knows to be waiting at these specific locations when he comes by so he can impress the “new students.” When he takes us to lunch we have to put money on our student ID cards, similar to those at Wofford. I put 20 Euros on mine, as do many of the others. We get to the lunch line and there are two choices; a Texas "steak" plate or a white asparagus snitchel, the latter of the two is a delicacy. For some reason this region loves asparagus, especially the white variation. I chose the Texas plate which consisted of unknown dark meat, it did not taste like steak, maybe a lean cut of beef, green asparagus corn, and other assorted vegetables. The side was a cross between Chick-fil-A's waffle fries and Checker's/Rally's seasoned fries. To dip the fries in was a spicy mayonnaise which wasn't spicy at all. I fail horribly. Caroline is decent, she has taken a few elementary German classes before. Alex, who says he’s “naturally good with languages” lives up to his self proclaimed title. He is beginning to seem like the brains of the group. Alex is about 5’9 with brown hair with a reddish tint, the darkest ginger I’ve ever seen. His skin on the other hand is just as pale as the many papers we have sprawled out in front of us. His freckles are centered on his nose but do not seem like part of his face but rather specs of mud that splashed him. Today he is not wearing his hat as he usually does. It is a blue trucker hat. His only other accessory is his glasses which are rather sheik; circular frames with a smooth black finish, the type you would see a European model. After German lessons, which are technically optional but all 6 of us attend simply for the sake of becoming better conversationalists, we explore the town.
