Spring Break in Croatia!European Union, Spring 2011
- While exploring Zadar, we went on the cheapest cruise I’ve ever been on… a 60 second rowboat from one end of town to the other.
- Croatia is set to join the EU at the end of the year. This is just one of the many symbols of disapproval I saw across Croatia.
- While making our way from Zadar to Split (two cities on the adriatic), we took a detour into the depths of Croatia to explore the lakes region.
- The Plitvice Lakes are one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. There are thousands of waterfalls with some of the deepest green water I have ever seen.
- Me and someone else on the program standing in front of the largest waterfall in the park. It stands at a little over 200 feet tall. It is hard to show exactly how tall it was.
- While exploring Split, the second largest city in Croatia, we stumbled upon a zoo at the top of a city park. The zoo was rather depressing overall, but I thought it was very interesting that they put a donkey and an ostrich in the same exhibit.
- Split was established as the capital of the Roman Empire in the 200s AD. The old town was established as Diocletian’s Palace. Our hostel was located in the old town, so now I guess I can say I’ve slept in an ancient roman palace before.
- While staying in Split, we took a day trip to the nearby city Trogir. Croatia is a country with over 1,000 islands and we wanted to explore a few while we were there. Trogir is one of the many islands and is extremely pretty.
- While in Trogir, we walked over a bridge to the nearest island to go find a beach.
- The other goal while we were in Trogir was to rent a boat to explore some of the surrounding islands. Unfortunately, no one in the group had enough Kuna’s (the Croatian currency) left for us to be able to do it.
This past week three other people on the program and I took a trip to Croatia for our Spring Break. It was a great way to relax and get out of Freiburg (even though I’ve already traveled twice this month). Croatia is an extremely beautiful country with welcoming people and good food. We had a great time exploring the various cities and natural beauty of Croatia. On the trip we visited the waterfall region, went white water rafting, and visited various islands that comprise the country. I would definitely recommend making a stop to Split and the lakes region if you have the chance.
But now being back in Freiburg, it is a bit of a shock knowing that there are less than three weeks in the program left before we have to say goodbye. These next three weeks will be extremely busy with wrapping up classes, finals, and then the Model EU.
