Montserrat!

Today, IES took students on an optional day trip to a small mountain town just outside of Barcelona called Montserrat. My roommates and I had all heard that Montserrat was a place that couldn't be missed, so we signed ourselves up and headed to meet our bus at Placa Catalunya this morning. I am SO happy I decided to go! Montserrat is absolutely beautiful. Its name means "serrated mountain"; a huge group of jagged mountains lined with trees and paths for walking. We spent the day winding through a steep and curvy mountain road up some 2,000 feet on our bus before getting dropped off at the base of a hiking path. Our entire group (about 50 or so students) trekked the rest of the way up the mountains. It was steep. Very steep. And, it was windy. VERY windy (I felt like I might lift off and blow away!). But we made it to the top! We had a breathtaking, 360 degree view of the area, with mountains and bright blue sky coming at us from all directions. It felt so good to be outdoors doing something active and challenging. After our hike, we made our way back down to the cafeteria and museum area, and spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around parts of the small town. We visited a museum and bought some things at La Botiga, before heading back to Barcelona in time for dinner. All in all, a great success. I highly recommend visiting Montserrat to anyone coming to the Barca area--but bring sturdy shoes and don't forget a windbreaker!
