After almost two months in Barcelona, a curious student finds himself in awe. Rather, the people, culture, cuisine, history, and tradition of this great country suspend him into a cloud of inspiration for the future. Upon realization of this sociological, and oftentimes psychological, maturation process, the student feels immense gratitude to not only the Spanish nation but also those branches of support through which the study abroad journey materialized. Here is another highlight of small – yet so significant – parcels of a Spanish study abroad odyssey.

When we think of places and things exogenous of that familiar to us, we often suspend into a cloud of uncertainty and resistance.

When we think of places and things exogenous of that familiar to us, we often suspend into a cloud of uncertainty and resistance. We prefer not to dive into the unknown, particularly when this journey is embarked upon without the company of our loved ones. A possible parallel to such a journey can be an American undergraduate’s studying abroad in Barcelona. Trekking without the comforts of family, friends, and home, the student experiences the life of not only a European but also a Spaniard…abundant with history, culture and passion. Local markets, sports events, rocky beaches, and political fire all pervade Barcelona’s livelihood; yet these things are in fact experiences we may witness in America. Rather, it is as if Barcelona is a home away from home…amazing us one day after another.

I’m here to say that I’ve already learned so much about the realities of the world without even leaving my home, Tulsa, Oklahoma….from the questions of these progressions to the idea that people everywhere across the international community has some story and potentially a background that puts them at a disadvantage whose non-existence we take for granted too much. Rather, my study abroad experience didn’t start in Barcelona, or even on the plane I will board in a couple of hours. It started a week ago, here in Tulsa, just preparing for this experience. I’m going to learn a LOT more during the next six weeks.
