Sarah Cartwright rss Auckland, Spring 2010

It is the little things along the road that really tease my fancy. Mist in the morning, a hot cup of brew, a worn pair of jeans. I enjoy the feeling after completing a challenge, I love to explore and discover, and I rarely travel without my camera. Music is my ultimate passion in life. I live my own song, changing progressions with milestones, and modulating with the seasons. This is why I study music at Gustavus Adolphus College. My dreams - to study audio engineering in grad school, or go on as a musician in the future - encourage my studies further. So my travels now take me to New Zealand, where I will be spending the semester studying at the University of Auckland. Along the way, I will be capturing my experiences in still frames to share with you here.

  • A Red, White, and Blue Welcome

After a frustrating trip trying to get from Auckland to my beloved Minnesota, I was welcomed with Independence Day! Red, White, and Blue all the way! These shots are of the fireworks display over Tonka Bay, Minnesota. Oh Minnesota: Home Sweet Home.

  • Model Behavior

On this day, my host sister and I went out to Piha Beach, and regardless of the elements (wind and rain and cold weather), had a fun photo shoot!

  • Landscapes Lost

These are some scenes that had gotten shuffled – second to more flash photos, but definitely should not have been overlooked.

  • Merino Encounter

Merino is a type of sheep here in New Zealand, raised for their soft wool. Well I like these sheep in a sweater, but not so much hundreds of them in the middle of the road, keeping us from our destination! Makes for a great story and hilarious photos though!

  • Tongariro Crossing

About an hour from well-known Lake Taupo (New Zealand’s 2nd biggest lake), is the Tongariro Crossing. Rising at 5:30am, we were at the trail head by 6:30, ready for our 8+ hour, 20+km tramp (hike) on the Alpine Trail with a side trip up Mount Ngauruhoe (aka Mount Doom, from Lord of the Rings).

  • Rescue Piha

West of Auckland, there is a black iron-sand beach called Piha, that has a reputation of being one of the most popular surf beaches in New Zealand. But due to its unforgiving rips and currents, it also earned a reputation of being the most dangerous. If you have ever seen the television show: Rescue Piha, it will put the real danger into perspective for you. In the last 20 years more than 30 people have drowned at Piha alone. Even so, it was the beach I learned to surf!

  • A Pre-Departure So White

Though it is a ‘Wonderful Life’ here in this ‘Winter Wonderland’ of a small town Minnesota, I am more than excited to start my new adventure in summer of New Zealand.
