  • Reflections on Freiburg – One Year Later

I am a stronger, more mature, and overall better human being as a result of my experience living abroad. Though at the time it was sometimes as scary as it was thrilling, now that it’s over, I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I had simply decided not to go.

  • Back in the USA.

Things were going great until about halfway through the meal, as I was cutting into my steak, it finally hit me: you are going home tomorrow, you will not be here tomorrrow. I almost dropped my silverware.

  • Last day.

Last night was our Abschiedessen with IES. They took us to a really nice restaurant where the food was delicious, the view was incredible and the wine just kept flowing. I said goodbye to a lot of people, and it was really hard to do so.

  • Last Real Weekend in Freiburg

The last time we met, my family was with me, so we spoke the whole time in English, rather than our usual half-German, half-English. So this time we spoke all in German, and that was fun. I’m really going to miss speaking this language when I go back to the states.

  • Abschied

This morning, just like any other morning, I was making breakfast in my kitchen. My roommate Martin came up to me and said that he had to say goodbye to me — he was leaving for home for the week and wouldn’t be back before I fly home on Saturday. It was a simple goodbye, [...]

  • Oops.

Been a while since I last posted. Sorry about that. Between mid-term exams and my friend from Scotland visiting, I didn’t have a lot of time on my hands. So now it’s time for an update! After my silly week of mid-terms and papers, I had a week off, so I met up with my [...]

  • Family!

Oh, and I completely forgot to mention this in my last post — my family is here! They got here a week ago and we’ve been spending a lot of time together, which has been great. When I’m at home I normally spend a lot of time with my parents and my little brother, especially [...]

  • Feeling torn.

I’ve been experiencing some strange feelings lately that I’ve been trying to write about and talk with other people about to kind of pinpoint what it is, and this is what I’ve figured out: I’m feeling very torn, torn between the home I’ve made for myself here and the one I have in the states. [...]

  • Pieces of my life here.

Little updates: – Tomorrow evening after my Drama class I’m leaving for Cologne with my friend Kelly for the weekend! I’m so excited about it; I’ve really been wanting to visit Cologne and it’ll be great to get away. Don’t get me wrong – I love Freiburg with all my heart, but it’s nice to [...]

  • Been a while…

I’ve been very busy! This month I’ve been to Scotland to visit my long-lost friend from elementary school, Victoria, and we had such a blast together. It was like we picked up right where we left off, like there had never been any sort of separation at all. It was such a great time, in [...]

  • Ich bin immer in Freiburg verliebt.

It’s hard not to love it here when the weather is this good; the sun has been shining the entire day and I’ve been wearing a tank top, jeans, and flip-flops. Spring has finally come to Freiburg, now that March has turned to April. On this particular day I don’t have class until 6 p.m., [...]

  • Hard to remember to write when you’re having so much fun!

It’s been a while since I last wrote, and since then, things have gotten even better. After a couple of trips to Ikea, my room finally looks more like someone lives in it and less like a hospital room, complete with makeshift curtains and some cheap artwork. I finally feel settled in with a great [...]

  • Immer Besser

I had a really great weekend, which may or may not be contributing to my feeling much better about being here. Over the past couple of days I’ve noticed that Freiburg is starting to feel more and more like a home, somewhere I belong, and less like a foreign place, somewhere I can’t relate to [...]

  • Better Every Day

So I’ve been here almost a week now. My intensive language immersion course started up today, which I think is a very good thing, because the more practice I get, the better I’ll get, and the quicker I’ll be able to speak with my friends and roommates and the rest of the Freiburgers. I mentioned [...]

  • Mixed Emotions

After all that anticipation, after all the freak-outs, I’m finally in Freiburg. I have a lot of different feelings about being here, so to help organize this post, I’m going to separate them into positives (+) and negatives (-). + Freiburg is beautiful. It’s got the city-feel without being too overwhelming, and it’s got charm [...]

  • Waiting for Germany.

After over a year of deliberation and two and a half years of learning the language until I sometimes dream in it, I’m finally almost ready to go to Germany. I’ve been looking forward to this adventure since I got the acceptance letter from IES, since I moved out of my dorm room at the [...]
