Aubrey Thye

Paris, Summer 2009

Aubrey Thye is a senior at the University of Illiois at Chicago. She is a French major and chose Paris for its rich cultural history. She hopes to develop language skills, conquer culture, and learn about French cuisine and wine from a local perspective. Aubrey started creative writing in grade school and appreciates writing as a tool of reflection and comprehension of new experiences.

Paris was Paris in many ways. It was the City Of Lights and the Most Romantic City in the World and the Eiffel Tower-a postcard. I met some amazing people that I will never see again.

Today was the last day of classes! I don’t feel ready to leave Paris yet. I feel like I could stay here for another semester.

I’ve been in Paris for a month now; it’s hard to believe that it’s almost over. The classes are more difficult than I expected and I’m finding it difficult to make time for city exploration. I’m surprised at how well I’ve adapted to the culture; I hope to return here, maybe even to live.


Bienvenue (Welcome) - June 8th, 2009

The plane ride was long enough to settle my nerves; I felt prepared. Despite my post-weekend fatigue, I hardly slept and opted instead to drink 3 cups of coffee (specially blended for American Airlines!) and read half of Rules of Attraction.


Pre-depature - May 26th, 2009

The plane leaves at 6:13p.m. for Paris. I have to leave my house in an hour. I feel entirely unprepared.
