I’ve been home now for three days. My jet lag is beginning to wear off and things are starting to set back into a pattern of normalcy. But this normalcy is relative. I find that I am relearning my old routines and reevaluating my old expectations for life in America. Though I was only gone for a semester, India did become home for me and I became very accustomed to the life that I was living there. I will deeply miss my rituals in India – chai and porridge every morning, autorickshaw rides to school, dinners with my host family, and listening to daily wisdom from my Auntie.

There is no way to measure how my experiences have influenced my consciousness and my global perspective. But more importantly, there is no way to measure how they have influenced my heart. I have loved my time in India, despite its challenges and flaws, and I have loved the people who were a part of my life. For me, studying abroad has become as much of a cultural teaching experience as it was a personal teaching experience. Learning to exist in a new way, in a new place, and having to adjust to a new set of expectations, gave me the opportunity to grow in ways that I cant even process. Looking back on the last four months it does not seem like a vacation from “real life” but more like an extension of the life I have always had. Though I am back at home, I have also left a part of my home in India and someday, hopefully, I will be able to return.

Last night our homestay family had the opportunity to attend an Indian wedding. The venue, food, and “small” guest list of about 400 people proved to be totally overwhelming and totally amazing! We spent the last few weeks getting our saris tailored and bangles purchased. Our Auntie lent us her amazing jewelry sets and bought us clutches that matched our fabric. Lakshmi, our cook, helped us to wrap our saris – which I am not sure I will ever be able to do by myself. I have never felt so much like a princess as I did last night and it took me about twice as long to get ready as it did for prom…

The groom arrived on horseback with the traditional parade (complete with fireworks). In order to get into the building he had to bribe the brides family with his enormous money necklace. Other fun traditions included stealing the grooms shoes as he entered so that he cannot leave at the end of the night and has to stay with the bride. We enjoyed an excessive amount of food and enjoyed watching the exchanging of garlands. I personally believe that Indian wedding fashion is unparalleled by any other variety of formal attire. I was blinded by sequins, jewels, and bangles that covered entire arms. The garlands weren’t exchanged until around ten o’clock at night, and as we drove away just before midnight I had the feeling that the celebrations were only just beginning. The entire production of the wedding was unlike anything that I have ever experienced in western culture and I am so glad that I was able to attend!

For our last long weekend of the semester Will, Jayme, and I headed to Varanasi – the holiest city in India. We stayed in a guest house in the old city just inside the ghats along the Ganges. The city is unlike anything that I have ever seen. Standing on the river I found myself amidst the traffic of ancient ritual and contemporary culture, holy men and street vendors, the constant clamor of people bathing, and an undeniable sense of peace. The roads are a thin maze of stone, filled with motorcyclists and wandering cows.

We spent entire afternoons wandering alongs the ghats just people watching and sitting in the shade on the steps. One day was spent visiting the holy sites of the Buddha, including the location of his first sermon: Sarnath. Surrounding Sarnath, Buddhist sects from all over the world have build temples to represent themselves in this revered place. It felt like we were walking over the whole world as each temple takes on the architecture and culture of its origin. My favorite part of the weekend was our sunrise boat trip. For two hours we rowed in silence along the ghats and watched as sun brought a pastel brightness to the buildings.

No amount of pictures I’ve seen could prepare me for the beauty that is the Taj Mahal. Josh and I arrived there at sundown and spent a few hours just watching the people and taking in the overpowering architecture. The marble walls, etched with elaborate floral and geometric designs are like white mirrors for the color of evening. Walking on the grounds was like falling into a postcard for a few hours. Moments of quiet observation were broken up by tourists asking if they could take pictures of us – which proved to be both amusing and annoying. Now that I have left, shifting through the photos I took, the result is underwhelming. There is no way to capture the essence of a place that is so deeply infused with history, culture, and memory. When I remember the Taj Mahal I remember the clusters of beehives on the East gate, and the sound of bangles clinking on the wrist. I don’t so much remember the height or the size, but the strange zigzag pattern that shown like red rock. Though I feel my photos and words don’t do justice to the evening, it is something I will never forget.

There are few things that give me more joy than going on adventures with the people that I care about most. This past week my boyfriend Josh has been visiting me in Delhi and it has been a whirlwind of monuments, temples, and wonderful food. Deciding which places I should revisit has reminded me of the incredible aspects of the city that get lost in the routine of everyday. He has given me a reason to return to some of the first places that I vsited in Delhi, only now I approach them with a greater historical consciousness. Some highlights of our week have been Humayun’s Tomb, the Lori Gardens, the Hare Krishna Iskon temple (complete with a Technicolor lightshow), the Tughlukabad ruins, and Himalayan hot & sour soup. Drinking coffee and watching the season premier of Mad Men I realized how despite the great location change – I still return to the traditions of home. This weekend we will take the bullet train to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I am so excited to see a new city of India, and going with Josh will make the experience that much more meaningful.

This past week brought our Geographies of Faith class to Amritsar in Punjab, which lies on the border of India and Pakistan. Here we explored the practice of Sikhism, one of the dominant religions in Punjab. Over our weekend we visited The Golden Temple of the Sikhs on two different occasions- allowing us to see the rituals of both the evening and the day. The Golden Temple is an overwhelming expression of beauty. Situated in a large pool of water that is considered “holy nectar,” hundreds of people can be found bathing and praying at all hours. At the Gurdwara (the Sikh word for temple meaning “gateway to the Guru”) one is surrounded by blinding white walls of marble and gold leaf. The Gurdwara kitchen serves hot meals for massive crowds and all our welcome to help peel garlic or make dough for chapati. The history of the Sikh faith and the Golden Temple has been one of extreme violence. At the entrance of the temple, one can take a tour through their museum of martyrdom and is inundated with portraits of the deceased. In juxtaposition, the major daily act of the temple struck me as both touching and sweet, this act is putting the holy book to bed. After ten in the evening the book is carried on a great pedestal while people chant and throw bright orange chrysanthemum blooms till it’s tucked into a bed to rest. The Sikh’s use this act to show the living presence of their text on earth.

In Rajasthan the stars feel a little bit closer to the earth. All that you can see for miles is dust chickpea fields and bouldery hills. Purple flowers grow in clusters at the fringe of the road. I just spent the last four days at The Barefoot College, a volunteer organization that provides training for the poor who have been rejected from the formal education system. The purpose of the visit was to conduct field research in the context of rural India. For this post I simply want to include portraits of the stunning people I was so fortunate to meet.

“He who teaches children learns more than they do.” – German Proverb

Since being in India I have become an intern at Prayas, one of India’s largest NGOs. The mission of Prayas is to empower and educate children and women who have been otherwise deprived of the opportunity. Their services cover an incredible breadth including a juvenile justice center for young men, vocational training, and rehabilitation centers for women who have been victims of the sex trade. I have been fortunate enough to intern at the Delhi center of Alternative Education for younger children. The children at this center attend classes with the intention of eventual enrollment in the state education system at the same level.

The first noun that the children of Prayas learn in Hindi and English is “Life.” Above all else, Life is at the center of their education. “Prayas” – which means endeavor imbeds a new sense of agency in the lives of these marginalized youth. My initial project at Prayas has been to create a book of the art and biographies of the alternative education class. The experience has been overwhelming. I have never felt so entirely welcome, yet alienated. The language barrier leaves me unable to communicate both my excitement and frustration. Though the children hold my hands as we walk between various activities, they will also mock me when I try to give instructions. They have an incredible energy that manifests itself in both vivid art and wild tempers. Below I have included photos of some of the young girls of the class during our lunch break, as well as copies of some of the art that will be shown in the book. Though their supplies and training are limited – it is amazing to see what they have created.
