Geologic WonderlandChristchurch, Fall 2011
If New Zealand is a geologist’s playground, then Tongariro National Park is a jungle gym that defies gravity and makes you never want to leave.
Alright, really bad analogy.
But still, the Tongariro Crossing in central North Island was easily my most favorite geologic experience. Every hill mounted and every corner turned brought new, amazing views. Check out the pictures and see for yourself!
- Volcanic rock, Mt. Ngauruhoe
- Easy part of Tongariro Crossing
- South crater
- South Crater, Mt. Tongariro, North Crater (flat top), Blue Lake, and Lake Rotoaira in the back.
- The crater rim of Mt. Ngaruahoe
- Crater rim, with South Crater behind.
- People on far second rim of Ngaruahoe, for scale.
- Volcanic rocks!
- Red Crater, Ngaruahoe behind.
- Emerald Lakes. Yes, they’re really that color.
- Red Crater, Mt. Ngaruahoe, and Mt. Ruapehu in the back – tallest volcano in New Zealand
