About IES Abroad
One of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most reputable study abroad providers, IES Abroad is a growing Chicago-based, not-for-profit organization that enrolls more than 5,000 students annually.
In 1950, twenty U.S. college students boarded the SS Volendam bound for Vienna to participate in the first IES Abroad program (formerly known as the Institute of European Studies). Today, nearly 60 years later, the study abroad experience still elicits the same response from students–that it irrevocably changed their lives.
With more than 80 programs in 32 cities (starting 2009-10), IES Abroad is dedicated to broadening our global reach and continuing our commitment to offering students outstanding academic options coupled with every-day opportunities for cultural immersion.
IES Abroad is also committed to the study abroad field, providing valuable leadership through organizations such as the Forum on Education Abroad, NAFSA (the Association of International Educators), and the Lincoln Commission.
